Case Study

Ornate Balcony

Location

Situated In Esher, Surrey (just by the race course)

The property

The property is a fantastic new build house boasting enormous internal rooms and decorative fenestration and embellishments throughout. Built by KM grant, the place really is impressive, we were subcontracted in by Nadar Oak to fabricate and install this one-off piece. Thanks to K.M. Grant and Nadar oak for making it happen.

The process

  • Architect’s drawings and dimensions were provided and a preliminary fee was offered and accepted.
  • The design was tweaked as per our recommendations to incorporate larger braces, this was done to ensure the timbers were of sufficient thickness to allow for moisture-related movement.
  • A timber list was provided and approved, the oak was then sourced and delivered to our workshop and the build commenced.
  • The oak frame was fabricated using traditional jointing techniques and the sill beam was laminated out of three sections of air-dry oak. The oak had been drying for seven years before it was delivered to our workshop, this was to ensure minimal movement within the cellular structure of the oak.
  • The braces were then shaped and jointed, again using traditional mortise and tenon joints but this time with a shallow housing to eliminate any shrinkage gaps that would potentially appear once the heating in the house is turned on.
  • We took the time to
  • Peg holes were drilled, hand rails fitted and balustrades were housed completing the structural workshop fabrication process.
  • Finally the braces were embellished with carvings, this was the extra mile but proved worthwhile!
  • The frame was assembled and lifted onto the lorry as one unit as site access was limited.
  • The frame was taken to site, lifted with a crane and inserted within its aperture. A fantastic frame that we are proud to have built and will exist for generations of enjoyment.
